Types of shea butter

There are different types of shea butter based on the extraction method, processing, and purity:

  1. Raw or unrefined shea butter: This type of shea butter is extracted using traditional methods, such as hand-milling and boiling, and has not undergone any processing or refinement. It retains its natural color, texture, and aroma and contains all the natural benefits of shea butter.

  2. Refined shea butter: This type of shea butter is processed to remove any impurities and odor. It is usually white in color and has a smoother texture than raw shea butter. However, refining may also remove some of the natural beneficial properties of shea butter.

  3. Ultra-refined shea butter: This is a highly processed form of shea butter that has been filtered multiple times to remove all impurities and scent. It is the most processed form of shea butter and is often used in cosmetics and personal care products.

  4. Grade A shea butter: This type of shea butter is considered to be the highest quality and is usually unrefined. It is often labeled as "raw" or "virgin" and is made from the best quality shea nuts.

  5. Grade B shea butter: This type of shea butter is of lower quality than Grade A and may contain impurities. It is often refined to remove these impurities and is used in the production of soaps and other products that do not require high-quality shea butter.
